Early Life and Influences
Alicia Augello Cook, known professionally as Alicia Keys, was born on January 25, 1981, in New York City. Her mother, Terria Joseph, is of mixed Italian and Scottish descent, while her father, Craig Cook, is African American. Keys grew up in the vibrant neighborhood of Hell's Kitchen in Manhattan, where she was exposed to diverse musical influences from an early age.
Musical Breakthrough
Keys began taking piano lessons at the age of five and displayed an exceptional talent for songwriting. In 1994, at the age of 13, she signed a deal with Arista Records and released her debut single "Fallin'" in 2001. The song became a massive hit, reaching number one on the Billboard Hot 100 chart and winning three Grammy Awards, including Song of the Year and Best Female R&B Vocal Performance. Keys' debut album, "Songs in A Minor," was also a commercial and critical success, selling over 12 million copies worldwide.
