Whit Merrifield Signs One-Year Deal with Philadelphia Phillies
Bluer Jays Decline $18 Million Option
Free Agent Merrifield Finds New Home
Toronto, Canada - In a late-night announcement, the Toronto Blue Jays and free agent Whit Merrifield have mutually declined a $18 million option, making the second baseman a free agent.
Merrifield has since signed a one-year contract with the Philadelphia Phillies worth $8 million, according to reports. The deal includes a fully guaranteed $7 million salary for the 2024 season.
The 33-year-old Merrifield spent the first nine seasons of his career with the Kansas City Royals before being traded to the Blue Jays in 2022. He is a two-time All-Star and Gold Glove winner.
Merrifield is expected to serve as a versatile utility player for the Phillies, who are hoping to rebound after a disappointing 2023 season. He can play multiple positions, including second base, third base, and outfield.
