President Joe Biden Drops Out of 2024 Presidential Race
Biden's Decision Plunges Democratic Party Into Scramble
Top Ally, Pelosi, Calls For New Nominee
WASHINGTON -- President Joe Biden announced Sunday that he will not seek a second term in office, a stunning decision that came after weeks of pressure from fellow Democrats and close allies who have publicly called for him to leave the race. In a statement released by the White House, Biden said that he made the decision after "much reflection and consultation with my family and friends." He added that he believes it is "the best way to ensure that the Democratic Party nominates the strongest possible candidate to defeat Donald Trump or another Republican nominee in 2024." Biden's withdrawal from the race leaves the Democratic Party in a scramble to anoint a new frontrunner. Vice President Kamala Harris is considered the most likely replacement, but she has faced criticism from some Democrats who believe she is too inexperienced or too liberal. Other potential candidates include former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg, and California Governor Gavin Newsom.
